The New MySpace Mail Quietly Emerges As A Big-Time Email Competitor

July 30th, 2009

We’ve been covering the new web email project MySpace has been working on in stealth mode for the past several month. Now it’s ready to begin a quiet rollout today, in beta, for users around the globe.

Here’s why this matters: Right off the bat, MySpace Mail with a sexy new interface is a major player in the e-mail space based on sheer size alone. With nearly 130 million global users, it will enter the field as the 4th largest email provider in the world, and 2nd largest in the U.S. (see chart). And it’s being built on top of the MySpace Messaging service that plenty of people are already using a lot — it accounts for some 20% of MySpace’s site traffic, we’re told. [ ]

MySpace Music Appears To Be A Hit, Increases Traffic Tenfold Year-Over-Year

MySpace may not be the hottest thing in social networking any longer, with visitor numbers and page views decreasing at an alarming rate, but apparently its free music streaming service MySpace Music is still something of a hit.

According to Nielsen datat MySpace Music Appears To Be A Hit, Increases Traffic Tenfold Year Over Year (PDF) for June 2009, traffic to MySpace’s music subdomain has grown 190% since its launch in September 2008 and year-over-year traffic to the URL has increased a staggering 1,017%. This traffic includes at least one visit by our own MG Siegler, who was happy to learn Pearl Jam’s new single premiered exclusively on the service.

New MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta may be convinced users are not sure if the service is a destination for music or not, but if these numbers are correct it would make sense for him and the recently announced executive team for MySpace Music to dedicate a good deal of attention to it. Not that they’re haven’t been doing that up until now — in fact we mentioned earlier that the service has much improved since its unveiling and according to a recent Telegraph articlet MySpace Music Appears To Be A Hit, Increases Traffic Tenfold Year Over Year the service is slated for a September launch in the UK.

MySpace CEO: “Our users don’t know if we’re a social portal, a music site, or an entertainment hub”

myspacelogo 215x56 MySpace CEO: “Our users don’t know if we’re a social portal, a music site, or an entertainment hub”

One thing that’s great about MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta — his emails to employees always have at least one good sound bite. In June the zinger was his reference to laid off employees as “bloat.” This time, he’s saying it like it is, again: “Our users don’t know if we’re a social portal, a music site, or an entertainment hub.”

Neither do we. MySpace always described itself as a social network until they weren’t the biggest social network any more. At various times since then they’ve called themselves a “premier lifestyle portal,” an “online community that lets you meet your friends’ friends” or just the largest “social portal” in the world that doesn’t begin with “F” and end in “book.”

Anyway, I assume Van Natta will have an answer to what exactly MySpace is at some point in the near future. He also says “In the last week, we’ve made some small but meaningful site changes that will lay the groundwork to provide more clarity on our brand and business” (all we’ve seen is a logo change, but there are likely other small changes).
